Position Overview
The Motor Mechanic (General) is responsible for the diagnosis, repair, servicing, and performance validation of a diverse range of vehicles and mechanical systems. The role requires advanced technical capability across internal combustion engines, integrated mechanical assemblies, and electronically controlled systems.
Given the complexity of vehicles serviced and the diagnostic depth required, the position is structured to suit a candidate with formal technical training at Diploma level or higher, supported by strong practical experience in a workshop environment.
Core Responsibilities
The Motor Mechanic will undertake responsibilities including, but not limited to, the following:
i. Perform structured diagnostic assessments to identify mechanical and electronic faults using a combination of manual inspection and computerised diagnostic systems
ii. Interpret diagnostic data, fault codes, and system outputs to isolate root causes and determine appropriate repair methodologies
iii. Dismantle engines, transmissions, braking systems, suspension assemblies, and steering components for detailed inspection and repair
iv. Assess mechanical components for wear, tolerance deviation, and failure using precision measurement tools and manufacturer specifications
v. Repair or replace defective components including engine assemblies, fuel systems, cooling systems, driveline components, and associated mechanical parts
vi. Reassemble systems ensuring correct tolerances, torque settings, sequencing, and operational integrity
vii. Conduct post-repair testing, calibration, and adjustment to ensure performance, safety, and reliability
viii. Perform scheduled maintenance services including lubrication, oil and filter changes, engine tuning, and system servicing to maintain compliance with emissions and performance standards
ix. Diagnose and rectify faults within electronically controlled systems including sensors, actuators, and onboard control units
x. Inspect vehicles for roadworthiness and identify required rectification work in line with applicable safety standards
xi. Maintain compliance with workplace health and safety requirements, environmental standards, and internal quality control processes
xii. Contribute to workshop efficiency through structured workflow practices, time management, and coordination with team members
Technical Capabilities
The position requires demonstrated capability in the following areas:
i. Advanced diagnostic reasoning across mechanical and electronically controlled automotive systems
ii. Proficiency in the use of diagnostic scan tools, testing equipment, and workshop instrumentation
iii. Strong understanding of internal combustion engines and associated subsystems
iv. Ability to interpret technical manuals, schematics, and manufacturer repair procedures
v. High level of precision in mechanical assembly, calibration, and repair
vi. Strong analytical and problem-solving ability within a workshop environment
vii. Working knowledge of evolving automotive technologies and integrated systems
Qualifications and Experience
To be considered for this role, candidates should demonstrate:
i. Minimum AQF Diploma in Automotive Technology or a closely related discipline, reflecting advanced theoretical and practical training
ii. Demonstrated industry experience in automotive diagnostics, servicing, and repair across a range of vehicle types
iii. Strong practical exposure to workshop-based operations, including fault diagnosis and mechanical repair
iv. Where applicable, relevant licensing or registration requirements must be met
