About the Role
HMI is seeking an experienced Welder to carry out welding activities associated with marine engineering projects, including vessel repair, structural steelwork, and piping systems.
This role involves preparation, execution, and inspection of welded joints across a range of materials used in marine environments, including steel, aluminium, and specialty alloys. The role involves both workshop-based and on-vessel welding activities.
Key Tasks and Responsibilities
- Interpret engineering drawings, welding procedures, and technical specifications to determine welding requirements
- Prepare materials for welding, including cleaning, bevelling, aligning, and securing components
- Set up and operate welding equipment using appropriate techniques (e.g., MIG, TIG, Stick)
- Perform welding of structural steel components, vessel piping systems, and marine assemblies
- Execute multi-pass and positional welding to achieve required strength and integrity
- Join metal sections with precision, achieving required weld penetration, fusion, and finish
- Inspect and test completed welds for quality, integrity, and compliance with specifications and standards
- Carry out repair welding, modification, and maintenance of existing marine structures and components
- Select appropriate welding consumables and techniques based on material type and application
- Conduct pre- and post-weld checks, including distortion control and finishing where required
- Maintain a safe work environment in line with workplace health, safety, and environmental requirements
- Collaborate with supervisors, engineers, and project teams to meet project timelines
Minimum Requirements
- Relevant trade qualification (Certificate III in Engineering – Fabrication Trade or equivalent), or at least 3 years of relevant experience
- Demonstrated experience as a welder in structural, industrial, or related environments
- Proficiency in multiple welding techniques (MIG, TIG, Stick)
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and welding specifications
- Experience working with steel, aluminium, and/or specialty alloys
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to weld quality and workmanship
- Sound understanding of workplace health and safety practices
Desirable
- Experience in marine engineering, vessel repair, or shipyard environments
- Exposure to vessel piping systems and marine structural welding
- Experience working in confined spaces or on large marine structures
